Find an Internship

Internships give students clarity and confidence in their career choice and provide invaluable, necessary experience for post-graduate success.

Internships provide hands-on experiential learning opportunities where students apply classroom knowledge to real-life situations, developing skills in a professional setting. Students can participate in academic credit internships during the fall, CentreTerm or spring semesters or the summer, and in non-credit internships during the summer. The CCPD can connect students with an array of internship opportunities.

In addition to these opportunities, our career coaches can connect students directly with Centre alumni offering internships just for Centre students!

NACE (the National Association of Colleges and Employers) defines an internship as a form of experiential learning that integrates knowledge and theory learned in the classroom with practical application and skills development in a professional workplace setting. Internships provide students the opportunity to gain valuable applied experience, develop social capital, explore career fields, and make connections in professional fields.

  • A learning experience with a real-world opportunity to apply the knowledge gained in the classroom. It must not be simply to advance the operations of the employer or replace the work that a regular employee would routinely perform.
  • Learned skills and knowledge that are transferable to other employment settings.
  • A defined beginning and end that is mutually agreed upon and consistent with institutional sponsor guidelines and schedules.
  • A position description with clear responsibilities and required/desired qualifications.
  • Clearly defined learning objectives/goals supportive of the student’s academic program goals and institutional requirements.
  • Direct supervision by a professional(s) with relevant expertise and educational and/or professional experience who provides productive feedback, guidance, and the resources and equipment necessary to successfully complete the assignment.

  • The chance to apply knowledge from class in real-life situations
  • The opportunity to “test drive” a possible career and find out if it suits you
  • Professional contacts who often prove helpful when you’re searching for a job after graduation
  • Relevant job experience and an enhanced resume, making you more marketable to employers
  • Possible academic credit on your transcript

Setting up an internship at Centre is simple. Students pursue academic internships during their sophomore, junior, or senior year and may participate in non-credit internships at any point in their time at Centre. If participating in a credit internship, they choose a faculty advisor and, with the help of the Center for Career & Professional Development (CCPD), find and apply to an internship site. Together, the student, the faculty advisor, and the intern sponsor set expectations for the internship.
