Students attending Centre College on an F-1 visa often want to work. However, employment opportunities are limited and strict rules apply.
- F-1 students may NOT work OFF-campus during the first academic year, but may accept ON-campus employment under certain conditions and restrictions.
- After the first academic year, F-1 students may engage in three types of OFF-campus employment:
- Curricular Practical Training (CPT)
- Optional Practical Training (OPT) (pre-completion or post-completion)
- Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Optional Practical Training Extension (OPT)
To get CPT or OPT approval, students are required to talk to Centre’s Designated School Official (DSO), Jessica Leonard. For all OFF-campus employment, the work must be related to the student’s (intended) field of study. OFF-campus work should NOT begin until approved by USCIS. Contact Jessica Leonard for more information.
